Rotaract Club Feasibility
John Hinck, Denis and Phil were invited to visit Olympic College during student Welcome Week to determine the feasibility of initiating a Rotaract Club at the college.  Allison Smith, a Skookum Member and Shelton Campus Administrator for Olympic College, invited Skookums to meet students and discuss their potential Rotaract interest.
 
Literacy - 4th Grade Dictionaries Arrive
 
 
Imagine a FedEx semi truck backing down a residential driveway to deliver 2 pallets of dictionaries and other educational books to a residential garage in the woods.  That's what Candace and Phil faced to receive 76 boxes of dictionaries as an early step in Skookum's District Grant Project: Literacy-Dictionaries  for 4th Graders.  The Dictionaries will be taken for home use by Mason County 4th Graders.
 
Simon Calcavecchia - Author, Rugby Player and Motivational Speaker
 

In 2002, Simon broke his neck during a professional rugby game in Australia. The transition from his injury changed his life forever. However, it has allowed him to grow in ways he never imagined.

In the last decade, Simon has spent a tremendous amount of time working with kids. It is a passion of his that has lead him to publish his first children’s book. With it, he wants to share his experience with quadriplegia and overcoming life's barriers.  Simon spoke to the club on September 5th.

Kyle Cronk - YMCA 

Kyle Cronk, from South Sound YMCA, gave an update on happenings related to the initiative on establishing a YMCA facility in Shelton. The project team is currently connecting the community in an effort to raise money for the eventual construction.

Mercedes Bournes - Exceptional Foresters Inc. (EFI)

Mercedes was our September 19th program speaker.  She is the Director of Exceptional Foresters Inc.   EFI's mission to assist people with disabilities by providing quality vocational evaluation and training; community employment and residential services which enable them to live in comfort while attaining their highest level of independence in all phases of their lives.
